Prof. Aspa Gospodini participated as invited speaker in the academic and politics event entiled European Week of Regions and Cities, European Commission, Brussels 10-15 Oct. 2016. More specifically, Prof. Aspa Gospodini has delivered a speech on ‘Migration & land-use changes in European cities’, in the session organised by AESOP on Migration and European Cities.

Her presentation pointed-out the land-use shifts rooted in

  1. Out-migration flows from European Cities like in the cases of East German cities, Polish cities due to the major political and economic shift in the ‘90s; and recently in the case of Greek cities due to the ongoing economic crisis.
  2. Immigration flows towards European cities from war regions and poor regions in Middle East, Asia and Africa, as in the case of the Greek islands in east Aegean sea (Lesvos Island, Chios Island, Kos Island), Lampedusa and Sicily, Italy.

She presented the land-use changes involving both the temporary refugees and migration camps and also the spatial integration and the long-term housing of early refugees and migrants flows in Greek cities in the decades of the ‘90s and 2000 (e.g. migrants from the Balkans, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, and others).
