Title: Sustainable development, cultural heritage and spatial planning in Syros, Greece

Description:

In an era were the protection of the environment and its cultural elements are constitutionally protected, the preservation of cultural diversity and richness of cultural heritage is not a luxury but a prerequisite for supporting sustainable social and economic development. In this context urban planners, decision makers and stakeholders have to deal with a dual challenge: on one side globalization accentuates the need for strengthening local identity while at the same time culture and urban heritage constitutes significant territorial capital for spatial and economic development. Therefore protection and conservation of cultural heritage is a central feature and has an essential role in contemporary spatial planning. This special session welcomes papers that focuses on the island of Syros and will address issues that are related to synergies between urban planning, conservation and management of cultural heritage. Therefore the discourse in regard to appropriate ways and means about how the right balance between the protection of cultural heritage and the promotion of future urban landscapes could be achieved, is central to this session. More specifically the session focuses on the following issues:

  • Urban regeneration schemes and transformation of urban areas through cultural oriented schemes
  • Conservation and cultural heritage management plans
  • Use of past heritage in the present as part of cities cultural capital
  • Spatial tools and techniques for preservation and development of cultural heritage and cultural landscapes
  • Cultural heritage as means for strengthening territorial identity
  • Cultural heritage as a factor for societal and community well being
  • Planning practices and best practices for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage
  • Cultural heritage and its contribution to sustainable development of local communities
